PRESS RELEASES

Sam Sutter
to Announce More Endorsements
Sam Sutter, who is a
candidate for Bristol County District Attorney,
announced today that he will be holding one of his
final press conference tomorrow, September 14, at
the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, 111 Pleasant
St. in Attleboro at 11:45 a.m.
Said
Sutter, “I am once again honored and humbled to be
receiving the endorsements that I will announce
tomorrow. My team and I are energized by each new
endorsement and I am so proud that these unions have
chosen to endorse me. The number of police
department unions that have endorsed me, plus the
nearly unanimous votes within these eight
departments to endorse me, show just how unhappy
police throughout the county are with Paul Walsh’s
lack of leadership. They want a partnership with
hands-on, tough district attorney and they do not
have that now.
September 7, 2006
Committee to Elect Sam Sutter
Sam Sutter, who is a candidate for Bristol County
District Attorney, said today that while he was pleased
to have completed four debates with incumbent Paul Walsh
and that last night's debate was challenging because of
the Lincoln-Douglas format, there are still some very
important and
fundamental questions left unanswered by the District
Attorney. Sutter said that he has met with citizens
from every city and town in Bristol County and he hears
the same refrain from them.
"Why did Mr. Walsh stop using court-ordered wiretaps and why
doesn't he
use them now to fight the gangs and solve the unsolved
murders in our county?
"Why won't he explain to us his constant use of plea-bargains
on the biggest drug cases and gun cases?
"Why was David Smith allowed to go back into the community
without a conviction and without having to register as a
sex offender and why didn't' Mr. Walsh talk personally
with the little girl or her therapistbefore allowing
Smith to walk away from the charges?"
Said Sutter, "These are extremely important questions
and the people of Bristol County deserve answers. After
four debates Mr. Walsh has been able to avoid giving the
people of our county direct and straightforward answers
concerning these issues that are vitally important to
our public safety. Mr. Walsh needs to be held
accountable. The people deserve to know how the top law
enforcement officer in Bristol County for the past 16
years can explain his policies on the above issues. For
these reasons, I have contacted WSAR radio talk show
host Keri Rodrigues and have asked her
to have Mr. Walsh and myself appear on her show next
week to get down to the heart of these three hugely
important issues and get answers for the people. She
has agreed. This will give all the people in Bristol
County the chance to listen to the candidates talk
specifically about these questions and hopefully get
some answers."
Sutter said that again, he is very pleased to have
participated in four debates with Mr. Walsh. At the
start of his campaign he pledged to do everything he
could to ensure that four debates would take place and
he is very proud to have accomplished that goal. Mr.
Walsh initially turned down the Taunton and New Bedford
debates, but after Mr. Sutter's aggressiveness and
persistence, the people of Bristol County had the
opportunity to see the candidates debate four times.
Said Sutter, "This is not a proposal for a fifth debate.
This is a challenge to go on the radio with me, and
discuss these issues in a completely different setting;
no audience, no pre-determined format, just Mr. Walsh,
myself, and Keri discussing the still unanswered
questions outlined above."
The date for the proposed discussion on the Keri
Rodrigues show is September 14th.

Final Sutter/Walsh Debate to Held
Sam Sutter, who is a candidate for Bristol County
District Attorney, announced that the final debate
between himself and Paul Walsh will be held this
evening at 7 p.m., at New Bedford Vocational High
School on Ashley Blvd.
Said
Sutter, “When I announced my candidacy, I made a
pledge to do everything I could to ensure that four
debates took place. I am very pleased that tonight,
that pledge will be fulfilled. Even though Mr.
Walsh initially turned down the debates, and then
turned down the Taunton debate, and the New Bedford
debate, due to my aggressiveness we will have four
debates. . This is the first time in 16 years that
the voters will have a choice as to who their next
District Attorney is. I wanted the citizens of
Bristol County to have the opportunity to learn as
much as they could about the candidates positions on
important public safety issues so that on September
19th they would have all the information
necessary to decide for themselves who they want to
lead the District Attorney’s Office. The voters in
all parts of Bristol County deserve to watch the
candidates think, speak, and conduct themselves in a
debate setting. These four debates have given the
voters that opportunity and with that, the means to
make a decision on September 19th.
Continued Sutter, “This debate will be conducted in
the Lincoln-Douglas format. There has been no
recent debate conducted in this style and I am sure
it will make for a very informative and interesting
evening for those present. The ‘back and forth’
style will give both candidates the opportunity to
discuss and debate the issues in more depth and with
more vigor. I am looking forward to this final
debate with Mr. Walsh tonight, and again, and very
pleased that we have been able to hold a debate in
each of the cities in Bristol County.”
Sutter
also said that he expects there will be a lot of
discussion concerning the unsolved murders in New
Bedford. Yesterday, Mr. Sutter released his
position paper detailing the failure of the District
Attorney’s Office in investigating and solving the
more than 80 unsolved murders in Bristol County
since Paul Walsh took office. Sutter said that this
issue is of particular concern to voters in New
Bedford because there are currently than 19 unsolved
murders since 2001 in this city alone.
Commented
Sutter, “New Bedford citizens are fed up with how
the District Attorney’s Office has been handling the
unsolved murders in their city. Victim’s families
are frustrated with how they’ve been treated by the
District Attorney’s Office. We need to utilize all
of the available crime-fighting tools, we need
specialization among prosecutors, and we need
coordination among the many law enforcement agencies
in order to make progress in investigating and
solving these unsolved murders.”

Sutter to Release Second Position
Paper
Sam Sutter who is a candidate for Bristol County
District Attorney, announced today that he will be
releasing the second of his position papers at a press
conference this coming Tuesday, September 5th,
at Weld Square in New Bedford Massachusetts. The press
conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the vacant
parking lot across the street from Giammalvo’s Market on
Purchase St.
Said Sutter, “From the time this campaign began on
February 14th, one of the biggest issues has been the
unsolved murders. There are 21 in New Bedford since
2001. There are 88 throughout the county since Paul
Walsh took office, January 2, 1991. Furthermore, there
has been absolutely no progress, from what I can
determine, in solving the tragic highway killings. I
will be discussing how Paul Walsh has mishandled many of
these investigations and I will be detailing my plan for
a greatly improved, and much more effective District
Attorney’s Office with respect to solving and
prosecuting murder.”

Sutter & Walsh to Debate in Fall River
Sam Sutter,
who is a candidate for Bristol County District Attorney,
will be debating incumbent Paul Walsh, this evening, at 7
p.m. in Fall River at “Our Lady of Light Band Hall” at 664
Quarry St. The doors will open to the general public at 6
p.m.
Said Sutter,
“ This is the third of the four debates that Paul Walsh and
I are engaging in. When I announced that I was running for
District Attorney, I said that the people of Bristol County
deserved four debates; one in each of the counties cities.
I felt that each city and its surrounding towns deserved a
debate for two reasons. First, because of the serious crime
and public safety issues we all face in Bristol County;
issues such as gun violence, gang violence, drug
trafficking, drug abuse, property crimes, and of course all
of the unsolved murders. Second because Mr. Walsh has been
in office for the past 16 years without opposition and
certain crimes, like gang violence and gun violence have
erupted. I am proud that through my persistence, we are
going to have those four debates. Paul Walsh initially
turned down any debating, and then later turned down the
Taunton and New Bedford debates. When Election Day comes
however, there will have been four debates and I am pleased
that the people of Bristol County will have the opportunity
to see the two candidates think, and speak, and conduct
themselves under the scrutiny of a debate.
Sutter said
that the New Bedford debate will take place on September 6th
at the Greater New Bedford Regional
Vocational Technical High School, 1121 Ashley Blvd. Miriam
Miquelon-Weismann, a professor at Southern New England
School of Law, will monitor the debate, which is scheduled
for 7 to 9 p.m. The New Bedford Standard Times will
co-sponsor the debate along with New Bedford ACTS, The
Women's Fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern
Massachusetts, Greater New Bedford Chamber of Commerce,
Neighborhoods United, and the League of Women Voters.

Sam Sutter Announces 3 More Endorsements
Today, Sam Sutter, who is a candidate for Bristol County
District Attorney, held a press conference at his recently
opened New Bedford Campaign Headquarters at 244 Union St. to
announce the endorsements of three more organizations. The
Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Local No. 3 Eastern
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine with over 4000 members,
the Coalition for Social Justice with 1000 members, and the
Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union with over 4500
members have endorsed Sam Sutter’s Candidacy.
Steve
Kenneway, President of the Massachusetts Correction Officers
Federated Union, along with Joseph Guarino, the Legislative
Representative were both present at the press conference and Mr.
Kenneway made a statement about why the union was endorsing Mr.
Sutter. Marlene Pollack, Organizer for the Coalition for Social
Justice was also present and made a similar statement. Retired
members of the Bricklayer’s Union were present and Mr. Sutter
read their endorsement letter aloud. Towards the end of the
press conference Mr. Kenneway, Ms. Pollack, and Mr. Sutter,
responded to questions from the media
Said
Sutter, “I am honored and humbled by these endorsements. I am
especially pleased that these organizations cover a wide range
of interests across the political spectrum. That these
organizations have chosen to endorse me shows that I have a very
broad base of support. Once again, I am grateful to the members
of these organizations for their support, and I pledge that when
I am elected District Attorney, I will work as hard as I know
how to make all of our neighborhoods safer.” For further

Sam Sutter to Announce 3 More Endorsements
Sam Sutter, who is a candidate for
Bristol County District Attorney, announced today that he will
hold a press conference tomorrow, August 22, at 12 p.m., to
announce the endorsement of three more organizations. Tomorrow
will also mark the official opening of Mr. Sutter’s New Bedford
campaign headquarters.
Said Sutter, “ I
am once again honored and humbled to receive these
endorsements. These organizations cover a wide range of
interests across the political spectrum. One organization is
devoted to advocating for the rights of working families and
fighting poverty. Another organization is dedicated to
aggressively protecting our public safety. And the third
organization is comprised of hardworking, patriotic tradesmen.
I’m looking forward to speaking to all of you tomorrow about the
great significance of these endorsements.”
Continued
Sutter, “I am also pleased to announce the official opening of
my New Bedford Campaign Headquarters. With four weeks remaining
in this race, it is important that the people in the largest
city in our county have a place to go to find out more about my
candidacy, what I stand for, and to offer their support.”

Sutter Challenges Walsh to Release Poll Data
Sam Sutter, who
is a candidate for Bristol County District Attorney challenged Paul
Walsh to release the raw data to corroborate what Walsh claims, is
his internal poll.
Said Sutter, “There
is no way these numbers are accurate. I dare him to tell his
pollster to release the entire data from his poll to the media.
Unless he does, this is a non-story and should not be published.
Unless he does this we will have just another example of his
deceptions or misrepresentations. I find it very odd that his
description of his poll said that 400 “individuals” were polled. It
did not say that 400 likely voters in the democratic primary were
polled.
Continued Sutter “I’m
getting plenty tired of his deceptions and misrepresentations and I
think the voters feel the same way. For example, he says the case of
the Commonwealth v. David Smith---the notorious child abuse case,
was a weak case. His office had an audio-taped confession in that
case. A case with a confession is a strong case. He then says that
the confession would have been inadmissible under Commonwealth v.
Ford. That is just flat out wrong. That confession was absolutely
admissible; it just needed any corroboration for a conviction. He
says that wiretaps are outdated; tell that to the Department of
Homeland Security that uses them to protect us from terrorists.
We’ll see next week when I release my poll data directly to the
media who’s ahead and who’s behind.

Sutter to Release Gun Violence Position Paper & Five Part Plan
Sam Sutter, who is
a candidate for Bristol County District Attorney, announced today that
he will hold a press conference tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., at the back
entrance to his office at 203 Plymouth Avenue in Fall River. At the
press conference, Sutter will release his position paper on gun violence
in Bristol County and he will address the current District Attorney’s
failure to deal with the unprecedented surge in gun violence that has
taken place over the past six years. Sutter will also outline his
five-part plan to reverse this dangerous and escalating threat to public
safety.
Said Sutter, “ My team has literally spent over 100
hours at the Clerks Office at Taunton Superior Court researching how the
16 year incumbent, Paul Walsh, has handled gun violence cases over his
past two terms. The results of our research are disturbing and
dismaying. While gun violence in our county has been surging to its
highest levels ever, Paul Walsh has remained passive. Despite what was
happening, literally at his doorstep, he never changed his approach and
he never changed his policies. From 1998 to 2003 there were over 40
deaths from shootings in Bristol County, yet Paul Walsh never changed
course. In October of 2004, four men were shot to death in New Bedford.
One area newspaper called the month, “Bloody October.” Once again, in
spite of this wake up call, Paul Walsh never woke up and changed his
approach or his policies. Whether he was just stubborn, or simply out of
touch, it is time for a new District Attorney with a bold new approach
to attack this serious problem.
Sutter said
tomorrow he will be distributing his position paper and the data
supporting the position paper to all members of the media who attend.

Sutter Requests Current DA's Budget Records
Sam Sutter, who is a
candidate for Bristol County District Attorney, announced today that he has
sent a letter to the Chief Financial Officer of the incumbent District
Attorney, Paul F. Walsh Jr., requesting that she release the budget for the
District Attorney’s Office, for the fiscal years 2003 through 2007. Sutter
said that the public is entitled to this information according to the
Freedom of Information Act, G. L. c. § 1 et seq. 950 C. M. R. 32.00 set esq.
Said Sutter, “The
budget decisions that have been made by Paul Walsh are a major issue in this
race. After sixteen years the public has a right to know about how their
tax dollars are being used by the District Attorney’s Office. We need to
know, for example, how much is being spent on, “independent contractors”
with the District Attorney’s Office; how much is being spent on community
outreach; how much is being spent on new technology to fight crime. These
are important questions that must be answered by Mr. Walsh. The people of
Bristol County want to know his decisions and priorities with respect to his
budget and compare them to my views about this issue.”
Continued Sutter,
“According to the law, Mr. Walsh has ten days to put this information
together for the public. Since he is the chief law enforcement officer for
the county, I expect him to comply with the law. I want to remind the
voters of Bristol County that Mr. Walsh demanded the same accountability
concerning the budget from his opponent in 1990 that I am asking for today.”

Taunton Press Conference to
be Held- 4:30pm Aug 3rd
Sam
Sutter, who is a candidate for Bristol County District
Attorney announced today that he will hold a press
conference tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. on the Taunton Green to
announce more major endorsements for his candidacy.
Said Sutter, “ I am, once again honored and humbled by the
endorsements which I will announce tomorrow. The police
throughout the county want new leadership in the
District Attorney’s office. Just ask them and they will
tell you. I am proud that I have been invited to
address police
department unions, and I am honored and humbled that I
am receiving their endorsements. I say the exact same
things to these police department unions that I say to
the public when I am campaigning, when I am speaking on
the radio, and when I am speaking on television. I talk
about what I am going to do differently from the 16 year
incumbent. I talk about a much closer partnership with
the police; I talk about more input from the police
after the arrest is made; I talk about more preparation
of the police before they testify; I talk about
prosecutors going to the police departments to give the
police updates on changes in the law; I talk about
prosecutors being available to the police to review
their search warrants; I talk about more prosecutors in
the court rooms of our county; I talk about longer
sentences for gun violence cases; I talk about less plea
bargaining for illegal gun possession cases; I talk
about no plea bargaining with major drug traffickers.
These are not ‘campaign promises.’ These are promises
and pledges from a candidate who wants to make changes,
to make our neighborhoods safer, and our court system
work better.
Sutter said he is looking forward to discussing these
endorsements tomorrow on the Taunton Green. Sutter said
he expects representatives from the departments to be
standing with him tomorrow.

Walsh’s Refusal to Debate in
Taunton
Sam Sutter who is a candidate for Bristol County
District Attorney, said today, that he was astounded to
learn that Paul Walsh is choosing to go to a fundraiser
for another politician instead of going to Taunton for a
debate.
Said Sutter, “I am really astounded that Paul Walsh
believes that it is more important to go to another fund
raising event than it is to come to Taunton to debate
the serious public safety issues facing our county. He
has only answered seven questions in a debate setting in
sixteen years. The answers that he gave at the debate
in Attleboro are full of holes. He has not solved 211
out of 245 murders over the past sixteen years.
Court-ordered wiretaps are not outdated, but more
prevalent than ever. The child rape case against David
Smith was not a weak case, but involved a confession
from Mr. Smith, and therefore was a strong case. And his
constant plea-bargaining with drug traffickers has not
benefited the public in any way. Furthermore, there are
numerous questions remaining to be answered about issues
such as what he intends to do about spiraling gang
membership and what his program is for internet safety
and what his explanation is for the shortage of
prosecutors in our county courtrooms. Since I announced
my candidacy, Paul Walsh has probably attended fifty
fundraisers for politicians, but he can’t come to a
debate in Taunton, when there hasn’t been one in
twenty-five years. I am now questioning whether he will
show up for any more debates. He seems to believe that
advertisements and two by eight signs and political
fundraisers are a substitute for debating the issues.

Sutter's 7th Annual Summer Tennis
Clinic to Conclude
This Saturday, July 22, 2006,
will mark the conclusion of the 7th annual free
summer tennis clinics sponsored by Community Development
Recreation in Fall River. The clinics are taught by former
international tennis professional Sam Sutter, who is now a
candidate for Bristol County District Attorney. This
summer’s program ran for three successive Saturdays, from
8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Bicentennial Park in Fall River.
There were three separate classes for beginning players and
one class for intermediate players. According to Sutter,
“We’ve had another successful summer. We had approximately
40 kids stay with the program from start to finish. The
beginning players learned how to hit the forehand and
backhand and the intermediate players learned how to serve.
And, once again in spite of the heat, everybody had a good
time.”
Sutter, who is in the midst of a campaign for Bristol County
District Attorney, started these clinics in the summer of
2000 in memory of his father who died in May of that year.
Sutter’s father was on of the best tennis players in the
United States in the 1930’s, ranking as high as fifth in the
world in 1932. The elder Sutter became president of the
Eastern Tennis Association in 1961 and led a movement to
expand the game’s popularity by giving free tennis clinics
in the public parks and public schools throughout the
region. Sutter commented: “I stared these clinics in order
to give something back to the city where I live and wok and
to carry on the legacy of my father. Over the past six
years, I have taught approximately 200 kids form Fall River
how to hit the basic strokes in tennis. As a former
professional player, I am particularly proud of the fact
that some of the kids that started playing tennis in my
clinics have gone on to become tournament players.” Sutter
pointed out that this past spring the number one player at
Durfee High School , Charles Kurgatt, and the number three
player, Bob Bielawski learned how to play tennis in his
clinics. Kurgatt, a sophmore and Bielawski, a senior, each
had outstanding individual records. Kurgatt and Bielawski
were both recognized recently by the Fall River Herald News
for their achievements this past spring in tennis.
This Saturdays’
program will be highlighted by an exhibition men’s doubles
match at 9:30 a.m. The match will feature Sutter, who will
play with his son Alex Jean, currently a member of the
Bishop Stang High School tennis team. They will play
against Bielawski and Dylan Walters, who also learned how to
play tennis in Sutter’s clinics and who played number one
on the Bishop Connelly tennis team this past spring. In the
event of rain, both the match and the final clinic will be
postponed until next Saturday.

Walsh
Rejects Sutter's Request for Taunton Debate
Sam Sutter, who is a candidate for Bristol County District
Attorney, announced today that he will
hold a press conference on Thursday, July 13th, at the Holiday
Inn in Taunton at 10 a.m. Sutter will
discuss the status of the proposed debate between himself and Paul Walsh.
Sutter said that one
month ago he sent a letter to Paul Walsh proposing that the preparation
for the Taunton debate
begin right away. Sutter stated that he waited three weeks for a response
and never heard from Mr.
Walsh’s campaign during this period. On July 5th, Sutter’s
campaign manager, Paula Bettencourt,
began calling Mr. Walsh’s campaign office looking for a response. After
repeated requests from Ms
Bettencourt to Mr. Walsh’s campaign for an answer about the proposed
Taunton debate, Gary
Mello, Mr. Walsh’s campaign coordinator , finally hand-delivered a letter
to Mr. Sutter outside of
Antonio’s Restaurant in New Bedford on Friday evening, July 7th.
Mr. Sutter had been having dinner
with his family.
Said Sutter, " This letter
is just another example of the huge gap between what Paul Walsh
says
and what Paul Walsh does. Paul Walsh said on May 16, that he would debate
me four times; once
in each of the cities in our county. Now he is refusing to do that. He
also said on May 16th that
after the first debate, I wouldn’t want any more debates. In fact, the opposite
is true. I want as
many debates as my opponent will agree to. I want these debates because the
people of Bristol
County deserve them. They deserve a series of debates about his approach to the
District
Attorney’s Office and the approach that I would take to make our neighborhoods safer.
Debates are
not a classroom exercise. They are the foundation of our democracy because they give
people a
choice."
Continued Sutter, "This
gap between what Paul Walsh says and what Paul Walsh does, began
16
years ago when he was running for District Attorney. He said when he was
running for District
Attorney in 1990 that he would stop the practice of plea bargaining with
drug traffickers. Instead
he’s been plea-bargaining non-stop for 16 years. He said that he would
roll up his sleeves and lead
his assistant district attorneys in the court room by consistently taking
cases to trial himself. In
reality, he has only handled a handful of trials in 16 years. He says he
is pro-active on fighting
crime, but he out of ideas on what to do about gun violence, gang
membership, drug traffickers and
unsolved murders. He says he is an aggressive crime fighter, but what he
really is, is a tentative
politician. I look forward to discussing these issues with you tomorrow."

Sutter Announces 7th Annual
Free Tennis Clinic for Youth
Sam Sutter, who is a candidate for Bristol
County District Attorney, announced today that he
will begin his seventh annual free summer tennis clinics for children ages
five to fifteen this
Saturday at Bicentennial Park in Fall River. The free clinics are sponsored by
Community
Development Recreation under the guidance of program director Jamison Souza.
Community
Development Recreation will provide free tennis rackets and tennis balls for the 40
children who
have signed up for the program.
Sutter and his sons Cliff and Alex, who are both high
school tennis players, will provide
instruction for beginning players, advanced beginners and intermediates.
Sutter, now a practicing
attorney, is a former tennis professional who coached and played
professionally in 10 different
countries throughout the world. Said Sutter "I began these clinics seven
years ago to make a
contribution for the sport I love to the city where I live and work. Over
the last seven years, I have
taught over 200 children how to play tennis. Some of those I have taught
have gone on to play high
school tennis like Charles Kurgatt who played number one this past season
for Durfee High School
and Dylan Walters who played number one for Bishop Connolly High School.
Sutter said that he is also proud to be carrying
on the legacy of his father, Clifford, who reached
the semifinals of the U.S.Open in 1932. Later in life, the elder Sutter
became was renowned for his
program of free tennis clinics in the parks and schools when he was
president of the Eastern
Tennis Association during the 1960s. Said Sutter "Despite the fact that I am in
the middle of a
serious countywide campaign, I wanted to make sure that this program goes forward
every year."
Sutter said that following the conclusion of this program, there will be a
three-week tennis camp at
Kennedy Park in Fall River for all interested youngsters, also sponsored
by Community
Development Recreation.

Attleboro Police Union
Endorses Sam Sutter
Sam Sutter who is a candidate for Bristol District Attorney
held a press conference today to
announce the endorsement of his candidacy by the Attleboro Police
Department. The endorsement
was a unanimous vote by the Police union for Mr. Sutter. With Attleboro
Police Union President
Russell A. Castro on his left and New Bedford Police Union President
Leonard Balegeron on his
right he said he is once again honored and humbled by the endorsement of
yet another entire
Police Department. Honored because the Attleboro police department knows
me well from my
years of work in Attleboro and they know Mr. Walsh well because he has
been running the District
Attorney’s office for the past 16 years. They chose me overwhelmingly,
that is quite an honor.
They believed in my honesty, integrity, leadership, and ability. I am humbled
because I now carry
on my shoulders the hopes of all the officers of the Attleboro police
department for a future with
safer neighborhoods, more cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office and a
more effect District
Attorney’s office.

Attleboro Police Union to Endorse Sam Sutter
Sam Sutter who is a candidate for Bristol County
District Attorney will hold a press conference
tomorrow at 10:30 at the Attleboro Police Department. Sutter will
announce another major
endorsement from the Police of Bristol County.
Said Sutter “I am
very pleased to announce another unanimous
endorsement from one of our
County’s police departments. It is becoming increasingly clear that the
police throughout out this
county are very dissatisfied with the approach that Paul Walsh is using
as District Attorney. The
unanimous endorsements of these police departments speak volumes about
the lack of
cooperation and partnership between the incumbent Paul Walsh and the Police.
Furthermore
wherever I go throughout this county I hear from victims as well as police officers
about too many
continuances, too much plea bargaining and not enough case preparation. There is a
simple
reason why this is going on; there are not enough assistant district attorneys in the court
rooms in
this county.
When Paul Walsh makes a
decision to hire a political person instead of
another assistant
district attorney that directly affects the prosecution of our cases. In
my opinion these decisions to
hire political people instead of more assistant district attorneys show
that he is more concerned
about improving his chances for reelection than he is with working
together with the police to win
cases and get tough sentences in the court room. It is time to take the
politics out of fighting crime.
At the press conference both the police and I will
cite specific examples on this topic.”

Westport
Police Union Endorses Sam Sutter
Sam
Sutter, who is a candidate for Bristol County District
Attorney, announced today that the
Westport Police Union has voted to endorse his candidacy. Said Sutter “I
spoke to the members of
the
Westport Police Union three weeks ago. I outlined for
them the clear differences between the
approach
that I will take as District Attorney on their cases and
the approach presently being taken
by
Paul Walsh. I explained that I will create and maintain
a much closer relationship between the
District
Attorney’s Office and the local police. This closer
relationship will mean that they will not
simply
hand over cases to the District Attorney’s Office after
they make an arrest. Instead we will
have
a true partnership where we march down the field
together toward convictions and tougher
sentences.
I assured them that I will ask for their input on the
proposed sentences on every one of
their
cases and that I will stop the excessive plea bargaining
which is taking place now. I also
assured
then that I will make changes in the budget
determinations in the District Attorney’s Office,
so
that there will be more assistant district attorneys and
fewer political people on the payroll. It is
time
to take the politics out of fighting crime and the
Westport Police obviously agree.”

SUTTER ISSUES FORMAL
CHALLENGE TO WALSH TO DEBATE
Sam Sutter, a
candidate for Bristol County District Attorney, announced today that
he hand- delivered to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office
in New Bedford a formal challenge to Paul Walsh to participate with
him in a series of four debates beginning in Attleboro in June.
Said Sutter: “two months ago, on March 15th, I announced
my candidacy for Bristol County District Attorney. On that day, I
challenged Paul Walsh to give the citizens of Bristol County the
campaign that they deserve through a series of four debates. I
have been patiently waiting for his response to my proposal and
there has been none. He just keeps repeating that he is looking
forward to “a vigorous campaign.” The best way to ensure “a
vigorous campaign” is through a series of debates in the four cities
of Bristol County.
Consequently,
today, I hand-delivered my formal challenge to Paul Walsh to debate
me, beginning in Attleboro in June. I wrote to him that I am ready
to debate him on June 1st, or June 8th, or any day in
June that is convenient with his schedule. If he continues to
ignore my proposal, I am going to go ahead and select a date,
reserve a location and arrange for a moderator. If he does not show
up, I will hold an open meeting with the public and address the
issues without him. With him or without him, these serious
issues--- surging gun violence in the streets of New Bedford, Fall
River, and Taunton; his plea bargaining of the most serious drug
trafficking cases; his abandonment of Superior Court-ordered
wiretaps; 17 unsolved murders in New Bedford in the last five
years---these and all of the other serious public safety issues will
be addressed. He will have the opportunity right up until the last
minute to show up. He has had sixteen years without a debate. That
is almost a generation. There is no good reason for any further
delay.”
